Jessie Ibarra is being hailed as a hero for extracting an elderly man trapped under his riding lawnmower in a pond on his FM 71 property Friday. The man, 68-year-old Steve Potteiger, remains in Baylor Hospital, where neighbors say he is battling pneumonia Monday.

Flavored ice creams were the hit of the day at the Sulphur Springs Senior Citizens Center’s Ice Cream Social, which drew 16 freezers of homemade ice cream and plenty of seniors more than happy to judge them. Bragging rights in the freeze-off were awarded to fruit and nut flavored treats.

With another dozen vehicle burglaries reported Thursday night and early Friday morning, Sulphur Springs police expressed frustration at the growing number and asked everyone once again to be sure their cars and trucks are locked and to be aware of what is going on around their neighborhoods.

Seventeen Chihuahua dogs were rescued from squalid conditions at a Como residence Thursday morning in a joint effort by the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office and an SPCA representative from Dallas County District Attorney's Office.
