A day before the end of the filing period for a place on the May 9 Sulphur Springs City Council election ballot, annual candidate Charles Oxford signed up as a candidate. Oxford will challenge incumbent Place 3 Councilman Oscar Aguilar's bid for reelection to his council seat. Oxford, who served one term on the council, 2008-2011, has been unsuccessful in attempts to win another seat on the council since then. In seeking reelection to the council in 2011, Oxford lost to John Sellers by a vote of 663 to 376. In his challenge to Clay Walker a year later, Oxford again lost, this time with a vote of 507 to 274. Along with Aguilar, incumbents Craig Johnson (Place 1) and Clay Walker (Place 2) filed for reelection the first day of the filing period. The filing period for a place on the city council ballot closes at 5 p.m. today, according to City Secretary Gale Roberts. The city election will be held Saturday, May 9.

Federal, county and city law enforcement officers arrested the pastor of Lake Highlands Baptist Church at his College Street office this morning. According to Hopkins County Sheriff's investigators, Chad Oather Calhoun, 31, was indicted by a federal grand jury last week on charges of possession of child pornography. Chief Sheriff's Investigator Lewis Tatum said the investigation began in early June of last year after the department's Internet Crimes Against Children deputies, working with other law enforcement agencies, followed up on information gathered by following up on Internet addresses and users downloading pornographic images of children. As the investigation began, deputies seized a number or computers that were subjected to forensic examination and the case was handed over to federal authorities. The federal indictment was returned on Thursday of last week and federal authorities were in Sulphur Springs this morning to take Calhoun into custody.
