Yantis school trustees have called two special meetings next week for planning and training purposes.

On Monday, Aug. 3, the board will meet to consider a proposed tax rate. The trustees are also slated to set a date for the required public meeting to discuss and adopt both the budget and tax rate for the 2015-16 school year. The Aug. 3 meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the Yantis Independent School District conference room.

The pilot of a small airplane that crashed at Sulphur Springs Municipal Airport just after 7:30 p.m. Thursday was reported to be in critical condition in the burn unit of Dallas’ Parkland Hospital with third-degree burns over 92 percent of his body about 9 a.m. this morning.

While the long stretch of rain during the spring and early summer filled local lakes fuller than they’ve been in quite a while, it also filled up drainage ditches and backed up into some structures. Yantis Independent School District’s gymnasium was one of those casualties.

The fall semester may not start until Aug. 25 in Sulphur Springs, but school administrators and athletic departments are already hard at work. Activities are also planned at Sulphur Springs High School for two grade levels — students who are entering high school for the first time and for students who will be entering their final year of school.
