With all the bad news coming from Wall Street, Washington and the world, it’s time for something good.

A lot of people worked very hard on a fundraiser for their friend who’s battling cancer. From all accounts, Sunday’s event for Robert Castleberry was a resounding success, with volunteers feeding hamburgers and hot dogs to more than 600 and raising more than $5,000. For about 40 years, I’ve been a Jimmy Buffett fan. Although he’s never received a lot of awards or had a string of gold records, he has carved out a niché for himself in the music world. This year at the pre-show tailgate party in Frisco on April 18, parrotheads (Jimmy’s fans) are coming in from all over the country to eat, drink and be merry – and they’ll be raising money for charities like the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, Why Me Foundation for Childrens Cancer and others. Last year, our group raised over $17,000. This year, we’ve set the bar at $20,000. It feels good to do good.

A special thank you to the people who are trying to find homes for abused and abandoned animals. It’s a tough job and takes real commitment.

So, if you think it’s all bad news out there, with bailouts, layoffs and corrupt politicians, remember there are a lot of people working to make our world a better place. Look for the good things, embrace them and treasure them. Support those who give. It’s all about giving back, especially during these trying times.
