Lady Gaga, the ubiquitous pop sensation of the last year, has joined forces with long-standing diva Beyoncé to drop what promises to be the largest pop record - and music video - of 2010 called "Telephone." The song, released last November on Gaga's sophomore album, The Fame Monster, has created a storm of hype and anticipation for the music video's release tonight at 11:30 p.m. on the E! network.
"Telephone" is infectious; every portion of the track - be it verses, pre-chorus, bridge or chorus - should come with a disclaimer reading "this will loop endlessly in your head." It is an entry in Top 40 pop that holds every prerequisite for a hit: a processed/danceable beat, familiar names, a memorable melody, a rap-like chanted bridge and a barrage of remixes (all, of course, available on iTunes).
What makes the track more remarkable than other radio hits and artist collaborations, however, is the woman behind the music - a woman who was an obscure reference just two years ago - Lady Gaga. The woman's meteoric rise to fame, with an album curiously called The Fame, seems oddly fated. Though Gaga would argue it was only a lot of hard work.
From the lower east side in Manhattan, Gaga has broken out of playing clubs to entrancing the world with singable electropop hits, raw acoustic talent and outrageous outfits which seldom-if-ever include pants.
The 23-year old songstress isn't like other pop starlets - she controls her own image. With the "Haus of Gaga," a group of her closest friends, she creates her incredibly fanciful outfits in an avant-garde style that has deeply seated itself in the fashion world. It is this packaged artistic vision that includes music, fashion and lifestyle that has garnered her legions of fans, who she has bestowed with the moniker "Little Monsters."
"It's all about everything altogether—performance art, pop performance art, fashion," she told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview.
"For me, it's everything coming together and being a real story that will bring back the super-fan. I want to bring that back. I want the imagery to be so strong that fans will want to eat and taste and lick every part of us."
Collaborating with Beyoncé Knowles, an icon of pop and R&B since the late 1990s, will open Gaga to finalizing that vision. Gaga has already recorded a track from Beyoncé's I Am... Sasha Fierce, called "Videophone". The Quentin Tarantino-inspired video is below:
The Little Monsters have overrun the internet with hype for the video, which is reported to be a sequel to her 2009 video for "Paparazzi."
