The 52nd Grammy Nominations were announced last night - sort of - in a weird, funked up show that lacked a lot, as those things go - at least, to me.
There was some good news for several artists we've covered this year.
TOWNES - by Steve Earle received a nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Earle's currently touring Europe in support of the tribute to his friend and mentor, Townes Van Zandt. I think it's the best CD released this year. It's what inspired me to write the series, "A Songwriter's Sojourn," because as Darrell Scott said, "All roads lead to Townes."
IN BOSTON - by jazz trumpter Chris Botti is nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Long Form Video. The video has been enjoying a good run on PBS channels and features some stand-out performances by Sting, Katherine McFee, John Mayer, Yo-Yo Ma and Steven Tyler.
MY ONE AND ONLY THRILL - by Melody Gardot received a nod one of the Best Engineered Non-Classical Album. Gardot is so incredibly gifted and she's just started to shine. She's going to be around for a long time.
THE ROCK - by Tracy Lawrence was nominated as Best Southern, County or Bluegrass Gospel Album. I think this is one of the best of its kind. It's powerful, spiritual and full of hope.
DOWN THE ROAD - by Kenny Chesney and Mac McAnally (right) got a nod for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. I saw Mac three times this year. Twice with Jimmy Buffett and once at a solo show in Falls Church, VA. He's one of the best musicians in Nashville, in addition to serving as Buffett's music director for some 30 years.
LIVING FOR THE NIGHT - by "King" George Strait was nominated as Best Male Country Vocal Performance. Faith Huffman, Luis Noble and I saw Strait debut this one at the opening of Cowboys Stadium. It's vintage Strait ... all country cool with a touch of heartache.
WILLIE AND THE WHEEL - By Willie Nelson and Asleep at the Wheel got a Grammy nod for Best Americana Album. I loved the blend of old Western Swing tunes, Willie's wry stylings and the Wheel's big, happy sound. Congratulations!
