I just finished the most delightful book, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It's been sitting on my beside table since summer. I've picked it up several times and tried to get past page 10 - to no avail.
I can't imagine why I couldn't get past the first few pages because the book is just wonderful.
The story is told completely in letters, with the main correspondent being an English author named Elizabeth. She has enjoyed some success during the war with a column about a fictious journalist, but she can't find an angle for a new book.
Then, comes a letter from Guernsey, one of the outer islands of England, and Elizabeth's world is forever changed.
While some of the rememberances of German occupation and its resulting brutality are sometimes hard to read, the overall tone of the book is just lovely. It's about friendship, people and loving each other, warts and all. It's also about self-discovery.
