One of the most important events in recent Texas music history is just around the corner.
Icehouse Music is set to release THIS ONE'S FOR HIM, a 2-CD tribute to Texas legend Guy Clark, on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
The set includes 30 of Clark's most enduring songs by some of country music's most illustrious artists.
A tribute show for Clark is set for Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the Long Center in Austin. Sarah Smith and I are making the trip. A couple more Texas music fans from Sulphur Springs will be there, too. People are coming from all over the country - and Australia - to see the show. I think they'll be talking about this night for a long, long time.
Here are some of the names who lined up to be part of the project - a first-class production by Tamara Saviano - Rodney Crowell, Lyle Lovett, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Hayes Carll, Joe Ely, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Terri Hendrix, Rosie Flores, Jack Ingram, Vince Gill and, of course, Clark's long-time running/performing buddy, Verlon Thompson.
Thompson took time to talk to me Tuesday and shared some stories from the historic recording sessions.
One note: If you aren't a fan of any of the above artists, please trust me and pick the CD up anyway, if for nothing else than for James McMurtry's cover of COLD DOG SOUP. It's the best thing I've heard all year.
I'll have the interview with Thompson and a complete review of the CD in an upcoming edition of your News-Telegram.
