I'm living proof things can wrong in America. I'm also living proof things can go right.
– Merle Haggard
In case you missed it, here's a link to the powerful, moving PBS documentary on country music legend Merle Haggard, which debuted last night.
On the phone this morning, I was talking to Asleep at the Wheel's Ray Benson who said, "I watched the entire thing. I though it was phenomenal. I couldn't believe all the great stuff they had."
Take Ray's word for it. This is a stripped down, close to the bone look at an American legend.
The film looks at Haggard's life from his boyhood in Oildale, California, through his time in San Quentin prison, all the way through to the present, where he talks about his little-publicized battle with lung cancer, diagnosed in 2008.
Take a break and watch this video. It's a slice of American life and a glimpse into a world few of us ever have ever seen.
