I want a netbook. They are all the rage right now for students, professionals and anyone else who needs a very portable computer. Most of the major computer manufacturers are making a netbook model, and they are all similarly speced, priced and reviewed.

I'm all about mobile computing being "mobile." That is the whole point of having a portable computer after all. It should be useful, yet small enough to not be a hindrance. I do not understand why some people think they need to get a 17" behemoth laptop to lug around - except for bragging rights. But I digress.

I have narrowed my focus to either an MSI Wind or an Acer Aspire One.

I have a budget of $300 and my criteria is:

• 8.9-10" screen
• 160 HDD
• minimum 1 GB RAM
• Intel GMA 950 chipset
• Intel Atom N270 1.6 GHz cpu

I don't care if it has Windows XP bundled as I won't be running a Microsoft operating system anyway.

I really like the Acer Aspire One AOA150 or the MSI Wind U100. I'm leaning toward the Wind as it has a 10" screen, but the Acer has a 6 cell battery, which will yield much longer uptime. Both should be ideal for installing operating systems not of the Microsoft variety. The Acer is also a steal at $229, although this is a refurbished model. The Wind is also priced nice at $309.

So, I'm still kicking the netbook's proverbial tires. Both of these models would do what I need and are well worth the money.

Netbooks are all about portability and are designed primarily for students and business travelers. I've lugged two different laptops around the world for the last 13 years and am now buying a Netbook. Lack of a DVD/CD drive is acutally moot when you consider they are antiquated in this day and age. Jump/Flash drives are the best way to transport data by a long shot. I download any needed software anyway!

I bought the Acer Aspire 1 at Wal Mart for around $300 a few weeks ago. So far, I like this machine. I primarily use it for business travel. The processor is a little slow as compared to my super-fast desktop and that is its biggest drawback in my opinion. I haven't needed a CD/DVD drive. Most software can be downloaded these days. And for the past few years, I've been using jump drives to transfer and store files. Plus, I think CDs and DVDs are on their way out anyway. What I LOVE about this machine is that it is so light and portable and I find the keyboard much more manageable than my Blackberry! I use my netbook mainly to check email while traveling and for making Power Point presentations. I also use it to surf the web. The screen is small, but it's fine for the things I use it for. If this is going to be your primary machine, then I'd recommend getting an external monitor for use at home/office. You can pick up a decent large LCD for under $200. I also like how long the battery lasts - I get almost 4 hours on a full charge. The other drawback (just kidding about this) is that it is so light that I forget that I even have a PC in my bag. All in all, I think it was $300 well spent.

Drawbacks are mainly size. Smaller screen, smaller keyboard and no internal optical drive. You have to have an external USB CD or DVD drive to install software and operating systems.
