It was my pleasure to cover the Sulphur Springs 42-21 win over Denison in Texas Stadium Friday. It was my first trip to that historic field in 10 years. I am so glad I got to see it during its final year of use.
I am officially 10-1 in games, events I have covered or watched at Texas Stadium.
The lone loss was by Jacksonville to Ennis, it was not close. But it was an eye-opening game for the boys from the piney woods to play in the house that Tex Schramm built and was graced by Tom Landry, Roger Staubach, later the triplets of Michael, Emmitt and Troy and the Super Bowl teams of the 90s.
Now Sulphur Springs has another chance to take on an undefeated team in that big time venue. The story lines in that game are well noted- with Rockwall-Heath being coached by Sulphur Springs 1979 graduate Mickey Moss. The Wildcats are led by Greg Owens, himself a 1986 graduate of SSHS. Reports have it Kendial Lawrence the all-everything running back for Rockwall-Heath, won't play due a shoulder injury. Time will tell if that is accurate. But still, a team like Heath doesn't get to be 13-0 without other weapons.
Holes in the head
Such idiots like Sean Avery and Plaxico Burress clog up my sports page and I don't like it.
Avery for running his mouth, like always.
Burress for packing a pistol to a club, then like a nut, shooting his own thigh. Now he is out of a job and facing serious gun changes, not to mention being wounded. You get what you deserve sometimes.
The UT fans are still irked about OU jumping over them and making the Big 12 title game against Missouri. Sure the Sooners will win, they are 17 point favorites. The Texas players and fans remember the Oct day in Dallas when they whipped OU 45-35 on a neutral field.
Others don't remember that I guess.
All I can say is Boise State once shocked the Sooners in a bowl game, maybe the same will happen again.
Coaches changing locations
Texas A&M Commerce recently cut loose Scotty Conley, a native of Winnsboro. They will be searching for a replacement.
In other coaching circles, Mike Leach at Texas Tech is getting big offers from places like Auburn and Washington, reports have it. Leach makes $1.7 mil at TT.
Schools like Auburn are also after head coach-in-waiting Will Muschamp of UT.
Auburn cut Tommy Tuberville loose and his golden parachute to leave, was really golden. Reports have it he got a check for $6 million
to vacate. Not a bad deal for 10 years of service.
