So I won't be accused of second-guessing or waiting until half the ALCS is over, I will say it right now. Right here for all to read - Texas will shock the world and beat the New York Yankees.
I did it. I climbed way out on a limb and the ghost of George Steinbrenner has a saw and he's smiling at me and I don't care.
I have historical facts - from the Metroplex to back me up - the Rangers will win it.
Trust me, I am basing it on the 1992 Dallas Cowboys. They were too young and too goofy not to know they could not win the Super Bowl. Sure they had Troy, Emmitt and Michael, but they also has a lot of talented players who were unknown and not celebrated. At that time Jimmy Johnson was just a college coach with unmovable hair who was still getting use to the league, but with a leg up thanks to the Herschel Walker trade.
The Cowboys that year seemed a year away, but they were too good to hold back. They beat the 49ers and then blasted Buffalo all over the Rose Bowl to win the Super Bowl.
These Rangers are very much like that team.
They have the stars in Cliff Lee, Josh Hamilton and Michael Young, triplets of another sort. But they have the wise, free swinging vet in Vlad Guerrero, let's just call him Darryl Johnston. Then they have the talented young pitcher, Neftali Feliz, let's put him in the role of Kenny "The Shark" Gant.
Just for fun or torture, I called up two different AP stories at the same time. One was a listing of the Texas Rangers playoff history, it was short, took about a paragraph. The Rangers ancient history was 1996.
Then I opened up the file on the New York Yankees playoff history. It was long, two pages, it dated back to 1921 and told of 40 pennants and 27 World Series titles and 13 other trips to the big dance.
But I keep getting this feeling about the Rangers. They just don't know they should be in awe of situation, the bright lights. They are just having fun and playing ball, that's why I am picking the Rangers over the hated Yankees from the Empire state. These Rangers are truly special.
Wouldn't it be great if the claw and antlers would somehow prevail over big check books and the pinstripes.
Well, I have made my official pick - Rangers in 7.
