The Wildcats had an intense Wednesday practice. The game plan was put in and Thursday was a "kick the turf" shorter workout.
On Thursday many of the high school coaches are involved in JV and freshmen games.
Many people don't realize that this practice is not always done at all schools. I know I have seen a few programs in my life where the HS coaches did not participate actively in the Thursday games or sub-varsity action.
Here at Sulphur Springs I have seen all football coaches involved in the program from the middle school on up. While Lawson Crook the MS coordinator is a fine, experienced and talented coach, it is always good to get coaching assistance from others. Same is true with the freshmen and JV, they get the same quality coaching as the varsity high school players. This is a wonderful thing. Not only does it make the whole program more consistent, but it helps the younger players get a grasp of the entire program.
Hat's off to Wildcat head coach/AD Greg Owens for running his program in this fashion. I think the results have paid off and future is certainly bright.
The Denton Ryan game is interesting on many levels. The big crowd at Prim for the freshmen games Thursday were already buzzing about the game on Friday. It's good to see that much support for the teams. Having two ranked teams in the season opener should draw a big crowd.
The game between Sulphur Springs and Denton Ryan is a first. So fans at the game can say they saw history made. Both are proud programs, each with a state title recently.
Sulphur Springs head coach Greg Owens has know the Ryan coaches for years. A member of the Sulphur Springs current staff - Matt Young - is a former Denton Ryan coach.
The Denton Ryan head coach was a former Sulphur Springs coach and had a great run at nearby Cooper.
The Raiders coach Joey Florence is a name well-remembered in this area.
Florence has only good things to say about Sulphur Springs and his time spent under the late, great coach - James Cameron.
Florence wrote. "My favorite Sulphur Springs story involved Coach Cameron. Coach talked me into working in the summer mowing Prim Stadium and the practice fields at the high school. One day it had rained really hard and I finished all but a small low area where water had pooled. Coach wanted to know why I did not mow that area. I told him it was too wet. He jumped on the tractor and took off. 15 minutes later he came walking up to the fieldhouse and said he needed my help because the tractor was stuck in the mud. I got the tractor out, cleaned it up and started locking up the fieldhouse. 5 minutes later he was back and had gotten the tractor stuck again. This time we had to call a wrecker to get it out. I got chewed out by the maintenance department and Mr. Durham for letting Coach drive that tractor!!!!! Never have forgot that story."
He added, " The game will be a tough one. Two proud programs. The Wildcats look really good to me on film. Should be a really good high school game."
