Recently, trying to do our part to help the environment, I found a location that recycles aluminum cans and other metals too. Unfortunately, I also discovered that it ‘can’ get expensive.
We turned in several trash sacks full of aluminum cans in return for a few bucks cash to Reed Scrap Metal on FM 1870 near Thermo. After driving into the lot near the business, a little voice in my head said to me, “be careful” after seeing the gravel sparkle with broken glass in the sunlight. I should have known better than to drive over it, but my desire to rid our garage of sacks of cans out-weighed my better judgment.
Well, I found out the hard way when I found myself with a flat tire. Luckily, I was able to have it repaired. Looking back on the situation, I came to the conclusion that the money I made did not warrant the expense I was out for the repair. I was thankful that the piece of metal did not find it’s way into the sidewall or in a location that would cost me a new tire. Those can cost over $150. Or that it didn’t cause me to have a blowout, while traveling with my young children. Some might say that I could have picked that debris up anywhere, but it seems to me that it happened just after my stop to Reed Scrap Metal and that it happen to be a large metal bolt in my tire. And I rarely drive down any other gravel roads. And have not had a flat in several years. (This is where I knock on wood.)
After sharing my story I have found that I am not alone. Several others that travel that stretch of road to avoid the longer route down Broadway and through the lights, to get to Hwy 11 and points beyond.
Who is responsible for the condition of the road? Is it the state or the county? If this is so common, why can’t it be remedied? Do I need to take my complaint to a higher power?
Does Reed Scrap Metal really want locals to bring in their cans? What can be done about this? I don’t have any problems recycling other items such as paper, plastic, etc. at other local establishments.
I am truly worried. This is down, right dangerous!
