A week after the News-Telegram urged people to vote for the Main Street Farmers’ Market in an online contest that pays the winner $5,000, the votes for Sulphur Springs have more than tripled.
In fact, the local market has the eighth-highest number of votes among all the markets in Texas listed on the website. (There are 114 markets in the state listed, with many cities having more than one farmers’ market.)
In case you missed it, the “Love Your Farmers Market” contest could pay off handsomely for the city-run Saturday market — the grand prize is $5,000. The competition is also giving people a chance to say how much they enjoy the new market held in Sulphur Springs every Saturday.
LocalHarvest and Care2, two websites devoted to the fresh food movement, are co-sponsoring the contest. Hundreds of farmer’s markets across the U.S. are listed, but obviously, the local folks would prefer you vote for our local market.
People age 18 or over with Internet access can vote in the contest, which began June 19 and ends Sept. 17, by visiting www.care2.com/farmersmarket and clicking on “Find Your Market.”
Better yet, here’s the direct link:
As of noon on Saturday, July 25, Main Street Farmers’ Market had 28 votes. At 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 30, the number had climbed to 83 votes. By 5 p.m. it was up to 86, and Sulphur Springs had the eighth most votes in all of Texas
If the local venue were to received 16 more votes quickly, it would put Sulphur Springs in seveth place.
Sixteen more votes would also put Sulphur Springs in the top 100 in the nation.
