Believe it or not, at the News-Telegram we don't make stuff up, we don't play favorites, and there's no liberal media elite conspiracy. In fact, we're not "media," anyway. That's TV and maybe radio. We're The Press.A few myth-busters about our newspaper:
- We don’t arrest any of these people ourselves, nor do we follow the police and deputies around during the day to write down the information as the arrests are made. Ninety-nine percent of the information in “For The Record” comes directly from offense, incident and arrest reports filled out by officers during the course of their duties.
- Newspaper reporters don’t have special priviliges that allow them access to secret information. We just know the Texas Open Records Act better than most people do. While we may be able to procure some documents a little easier than other people simply because we know how the procedures work better than others, any citizen has just as much legal right to access these types of documents as any journalist.
- Police VERY rarely try to withhold the names of certain people who have been arrested just to protect their reputation. Odds are if they don't want to sully a reputation, the cop just won't arrest them in the first place (duh). Now, some may have TRIED to do it in the past, but this has rarely ever happened.
I'll post more as they come to mind.
